I guess it just come down to what we're used to ? My mom would get so frustrated when I used to say bye, or bye bye to grown-ups, when I was a kid. Now, I nag my own kids... Lol !

The definition is:
Used to express an acknowledgment of parting.

n., pl. -byes or -byes also -bys.
An acknowledgment at parting, especially by saying “goodbye.”
An act of parting or leave-taking: many sad goodbyes.
[Alteration (influenced by good day) of God be with you.]

WORD HISTORY No doubt more than one reader has wondered exactly how goodbye is derived from the phrase “God be with you.” To understand this, it is helpful to see earlier forms of the expression, such as God be wy you, god b'w'y, godbwye, god buy' ye, and good-b'wy. The first word of the expression is now good and not God, for good replaced God by analogy with such expressions as good day, perhaps after people no longer had a clear idea of the original sense of the expression. A letter of 1573 written by Gabriel Harvey contains the first recorded use of goodbye: “To requite your gallonde [gallon] of godbwyes, I regive you a pottle of howdyes,” recalling another contraction that is still used.

Cheerio !

A 'bye' is a passing of something. If you are having a bad day or a good day and something you wanted to do passed you up, you would be having a bad 'bye'. But people don't want to hear that, even themselves, so you don't hear that phrase. However, when everything is working great and you know you will see some one you care about the next day you say 'Goodbye' meaning it will be good to see you in the next passing day or so.

It depends on the way you say and what your in. There can be two types in a "goodbye." One type is good as good day or night and/or a friendly way of saying "bye." The other type is a bad kind of bye, such as you breaking up with a man/woman and he/she getting mad and saying a bye for a while. Just saying "bye" just means "goodbye" but in a normal way. It's all quite easy.

1.A secondary matter; a side issue. Bye-laws are passed by a local authority rather than national government for local observance. 2.Sports. The position of one who draws no opponent for a round in a tournament and so advances to the next round. idiom: 3. by the bye (or by): By the way; incidentally. 4. Bye-bye: goodbye 5. It is also a cricketing term which has something to do with the ball going wide and hitting the body of the batsman instead of his bat.

its appears less abrupt and rude. have you ever notice when you say good bye to folks, it takes 5 minutes to say goodbye. as humans, we do not like abruptness. we like a gradual cresendo. rather than just "bye", it's "good-bye".

It's a shortened (condensed) form of the old English "God be with ye".
Partings in other languages are similar. The Spanish say 'a dios' (to God), or 'via con dios' (go with God), the French say 'a dieu' (to God).

To truly love someone, you have to be willing to let them go. 'Good' in this sense doesn't necassarally mean something desirable, moreso- it is the right thing to do.
