the ones I've seen look like they are shooting across the sky, it only lasts a second so it's hard to see that they are falling, it looks like they are just flying by

Actually, I don't even know why they are called shooting "stars." They are not actually stars but tiny meteorites that burn up in the atmosphere. Not stars at all...........

we sometimes see are just bits of debris in space, called meteors, that enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up as they are pulled toward us by the Earth's gravity. Some are just small specks of dust, but some can be large, and occasionally one doesn't burn up completely, but lands on Earth as a meteorite.
