I can understand why we NEED money. But most people are just too addicted with the thought of earning more & more without realizing they have no purpose for it. Some people are just happy holding lots of cash in their hands without knowing how or what to spend them on. It's a little ridiculous. I mean, is enough EVER enough? My neighbor spent all of his life working as hard as he can & obsessed with having a big wealthy bank account with lots of zeros. Has up to a year vacation, he wouldn't travel anywhere. still doesn't want explore the world, doesn't care about his family, his wife forced him to give his daughter one out of the nine houses that he has & he later on confessed that he wanted to commit suicide because he didn't want to give up his property. It's true. I was shocked. I could never imagined such kind of soul would exist . I mean, he has everything he needs, & it's time for retirement (which all of his coworkers already did) Why is it that people are so greedy

Money equals security for most people. I believe that the more insecure someone is the more greedy or money obsessed they are. Your nieghbor must have had a really bad childhood in order to be THAT obsessed with money or property.

We we all have an inherit need for security and peace. It goes back to childhood. Many people feel that having money gives them a sense of security and peace. Having money does make you feel comfortable, but when you obsess over it, then it becomes a problem. I think society influences the masses. Marketers and advertisements train Americans to believe that having the most toys and money wins, along with security. But we all know that a human requires the basics to have a fulfilling life; love, joy, peace and food.

It's been made into the key to survival... People were once obsessed with hunting down enough food, now they are obsessed with having enough money to get that food and survival, and enough to ensure they can keep surviving... I think the fact that it has gotten to where you can't have anything (and can't survive) unless you have it (survival depending all on this one stupid thing), and the insecurity of our existence that causes, is partly to blame for people wanting more and more.

I think your neighbor does place his feeling of security and value as a person on how much he has... I doubt if it's really purposeful greed on his part, but rather what this society or his family made him into.

"Money is the root of all evil" sure seems to apply to your neighbor.
I don't understand a person such as your neighbor. It's like he is possessed; nothing matters except where he get the next dime. And what happens to him? He dies and somebody else spends the cash, or he gets ill and medical expense eats it all up.

So many people are never happy with what they have got. Always wanting a more expensive car or bigger house etc. i know someone like that. Insecure and trying to convince themselves they are happy. There is nothing wrong with wealth, but it doesnt buy you happiness. It just means you dont have to worry so much about bills.

In our culture, we strive for status, and status is garned by the number of zeros in your bank account, combined with objects that show off those numbers of zeros. A car, a watch, a house, a purse, a ring, etc... Screw money.

Amen! Sooooo true @ blacks don't tip. They're probably obsessed because they never had it before so when they have it they're too dumbfounded by it.

i dont think that its so much as being obsessed but being a way to survive - im with you - i dont think we should need to have money to be happy or live your life - unfortunately thats not the way that reality works

In an extreme case like this guy's, it's absolutely neurotic. Insecurity has no deeper depths! If so, I don't know who wants to know of them!

It might come from times like the Depression, when money was scarce......it might come from being insecure........money cures all ills, if you let the media
make you believe this....it might come from our society becoming isolated from one another and having no sense of community........in this situation you are judged by what you have and not who you are...........
