I have a portable USB hard drive which works every where on other computers, but just not on my USB on my computer. It did work before, but just suddenly refused to work properly. It just seems to never stop reading the thing as the red light is on permanently when I plug it onto my computer. Does anyone have any solutions?

Thanks in advance.

If it works on other computers and not yours, that means there is nothing wrong with the USB hard drive, the problem is with your computer. Lets boil it down to 3 possible problems:
1. Hardware. Try plugging it into a different USB port first.
2. Software. Check the device manager (to find it right click my computer, select Properties, then, on the hardware tab, click device manager) to see if the USB drivers are installed. Right click the USB in device manager and click update driver. Also check with your computer manufacture for firmware updates.
3. Malware. Go through the process to get rid of malware.

If, as you said, it's failed to work on 3 different PCs, then most likely this is a hardware problem, not an issue with your drivers. This many actually be good news, in a sense, as the error doesn't indicate a drive failure so your data is probably okay; rather it indicates a failure of the drive enclosure or its USB interface. You may be able to access it just fine if you purchase a different external drive enclosure and move the hard drive from the SUMO enclosure to the new one. Are you the original purchaser of the item? If so, then you can also expect some support from the manufacturer, even if it's just in sending a replacement enclosure.

Nowadays, most external devices are conveniently connected to a computer using the USB ports. Some times, the USB device is not recognized by the computer due to a number of reasons. Please visit http://fixit.in/usbdevice.html for more information

What OS do you have? Windows ME, does not support plug-n-play. You have to plug USD drive in BEFORE you boot up. It will work until you remove it. You can reconfigure it each time, or insert before booting up. Windows XP supports Plug-n-play

Well if it has a driver it might have got corrupt so try un installing the driver (or software) that its uses and re-installing it as this might help other wise contact the company who makes it.
