It comes down to what you're using it for....with vista being the resource hog that it is I wouldn't count on upgrading from xp on an older system
beyond that, if all you really need it for is to check email, browse the web, maybe some occasional photoshopping or word processing. All that can be done any any old school pentium 3. you don't need anything special if you're not running vista or trying to play games.
Keep in mind though that there are cheapies out there. e-machines or even dell usually have some low-end budget system for a reasonable price. Not sure what the current offers are with vista out now but usually they have something around $400 or so and you'll get all brand new components with a 1year warranty.

They are good they can be just as good if not better than a brand new one but you have to make sure you get a good warranty
Depends on what you want them for but i wouldn't buy from a website but that's just me, You don't know how secure it is there are lots of second hand computer shops all ya gotta do is look in your phone book
You can even go to pawn shops and buy computers but there again you gotta get a warranty
Don't let pushy sales people tell you what you need you know what you want it for desktops are just fine
Laptops sorry to say are a total waste of money, The only reason that you would need a laptop is if you are travelling on buisness a lot that would be the only reason to look at a laptop.
Desktops are way more reliable, That's my opinion But for what you want it for a desktop is just fine,

It's not a waste of money... I know a friend who bought a refurbished laptop about 4 years ago and it has never failed him... They're almost like the same as any brand new laptop, only that someone has used it before you... 90 day warranty is not nice, so upgrade to 3 years for the 70 dollars. You are lucky to get 3 year warranty for 70 bux, because it costs me 280 dollars to upgrafde my warranty to only two years from dell.
I'd say go for it. There's no big harm in it... Just make sure you upgrade the warranty, and if you don't like the computer when it arrives, simply return it before the expiring date.

they are exactly as stated refurbished, what you have to take into consideration is WHY,most refurbs are trade ins and they are traded in as people have upgraded ,most have upgraded as they need a better nachine to keep up with technology.personally i would recommend buying a new one ,a refurb would do for internet surfing but if you are going to play games etc online then they will most likely struggle as they are usually at least a couple of years old.2 years is a long time as far as the speed and spec of computers goes.plua a 90 day warranty is not much considering the price of them,if they were real good machines then they would warrant them for longer.

i work in a computer store that sells refurbished computers. buying a refurbished computer isn't a bad idea. You can get the same specs in a refurbished computer as you can in a brand new one for much less, and most of the time you can get a warranty just as good too, it just depends on where you go.

A refurbished computer is like a used car. Some are good while others are bad. I have refurbished hundreds of computers and have many satisfied customers.

depends on what you are expecting. Do you plan to use a computer for excessive gaming, downloading a lot. If so, I would suggest getting a new computer. Usually refurbished computers have old components and if it is too old some programs or hardware may not work properly on them.

Contact the council's waste department and see if they will give them to you. Alternatively you could try contacting local companies. However unless you comply with data protection legislation to do with clearing hard drives you may find little luck. Advertising for home users may help, since a lot of people have old PCs they are trying to get rid of.

If it is refurbished by the manufacturer, it is fine. I bought a refurbished HP printer eight years ago. The computer has been replaced, but the printer is still in use.

They are repaired computers for a reason. I don't trust them at all! The warranties don't cover too many things and their warranties dont last a long time.
