...contact and reference information? How is this resource actually being utilized in the business world?

As a recruiter if I saw linked in on a resume I would laugh. LinkedIn is meant to be a networking to not a means of contact or checking references.

This site is more for networking like minded individuals or potential business deals. How would you use it as reference unless you actually know these other people on your Linkedln account? I would say you can list it, it just doesn't hold a large amount of credibility.
