I have been listening to bagpipes for a while and have gotten a practice chanter from one of my mother's friends but I think the Reed inside of it has something wrong with it.

Does anyone know what kind of bagpipes/chanter or anything that would be good to start?

Gotta love the Bagpipes. ^_^

First of all, you need an instructor. You really can't learn the instrument on your own. There are too many nuances to playing that you can't get from a book. (Like what's wrong with your pc reed and can you fix it or need a new one?)

Take lessons from an instructor. The average student is on the pc for about a year before ready to move on to the pipes. By then you'll know if you want to proceed or not. There's a high dropout rate because it's not an easy instrument to play. There are more pipers in North American than the rest of the world combined, so you should be able find an instructor in your area.

After you decide to purchase pipes, you'll probably find yourself still on a steep learning curve for about another year. It takes time to build up your diaphragm muscle to blow steadily and to put the tunes you learned on the pc on the pipes. There's a lot to learn about the high maintenance of the instrument, so an instructor is a must. (Do you see a recurring theme here?) Playing with a band is also a great way to meet people and make a lot of friends all over the country. There's not too many places I can't go around the country and not know a piper in the vincinty.

Don't know the best way to start, but after you do start, hook up with someone with an electric guitar. Bagpipes and electric guitar kick some major a$$. Just listen to some AC/DC.
