Melafix is recommended for fin rot. I have never tried it, but severl of the regulars here say that it is very good.

First to answer your question....Melafix cures finrot due to it being made with tea tree oil which is a natural healing agent. Melafix is a good product but as said by others salt is cheaper. Make sure your fish are a species that can tolerate salt though. You might also look into treating with Myxazin or Maracyn. I haven't seen to many places that sell it but if you can find a product called Interpet # 8 it's made specifically to cure finrot and get rid of fungus.

Melafix has tea tree oil in it. Tea tree oil is a mild anticeptic--people even use it on their skin for curing things or alleviating itches, etc. I personally didn't find Melafix very useful and many of my fish seemed to be allergic to it (some tried to jump out of the tank when I used it in there). For mild finrot, a little salt in the the water and cleaning teh water daily usually works (unless the finrot is due to an internal infection the fish may have). If the finrot is bad, use a good fish antibiotic and follow the instructions.

Melafix or salt (use aquarium salt it's cheap.) will cure fin rot in clean water. Nothing will cure it if the tank is full of ammonia. If the ammonia numbers are high enough to burn the fishes fins you will kill them with a massive water change! The water must be changed slowly,10% a day, until the pH in the tank and the pH of the replacement water(treated water ready to add back into the tank) are the same. Good luck.----PeeTee

Hello. I am 26 and own a 75 and 55 gallon tank. I had a goldfish that was almost a foot long. I think melafix is a cure all. It is a miracle product. I rarely ever have death....my fish live for years. It is all natural and safe, so you don't have to worry about chemicals.

Melafix is a natural cure for many external parasites. I have never used it because salt is cheaper, but I know lots of people who do use it and it works great for them.
Oh and by the way, you can use iodized salt, the amount of iodine is so small that the fish would be pickled in brine before the iodine hurts them.
