what you can do at home? not much unless you already have aquarium salt from fresh water tanks sitting around and fungus treatment. however, follow these directions as much as you can (for instance if you have nothing, do the first step, and do it everyday until you can get out and get the treatment, or do up to the second step if you have aquarium salt around your house). but try to get out asap or your fish is not likely to make it.

do a 50% water change for 5gallons or more. if he's in anything under 5 gallons do a full water change.

when you refill the tank add 1/2 a teaspoon of aquarium salt for every gallon of water he's in.

add fungus treatment. fungus eliminator by jungle I've heard is good, but I add something called "fungus cure" it;'s a cheap little thing but works great. follow the directions on the bottle.

Well I would contact a pet store that specializes in fish and ask them, sounds like she has something to me. Don't wait too long, my male died when I was still trying to diagnose him, looking through fish books.
