1) "why do you think that is vital that history of the holocaust be passed on to each generation?"
History DOES repeat itself, and the more we ignore the issues the more we're encouraging it to happen again. The Rape of Nanking saw over 300,000 people killed in just a few days and thousands more women raped. In modern times Rwanda was massacring a whole culture, but it was ignored by the modern world. We NEED to teach our youth and know how to prevent such astocities from occuring again.
2. "how do books such as NIGHT by Elie Wiesel and the DIARY OF ANNE FRANK help prevent predjudice and violence in todays world?"
They real life experience and emotions of what it is like to be a torture victim or a captive in a world of terror. They educate by exploring the violent nature of humanity yet the innocent and hopeful (sometimes hopeless) realizations of those suffering at the hands of the too-powerful. We can't stop prejuidices, but we can help open the eyes of people as to what can happen and WILL happen again if we don't change our ways.
3. "what individual acts of goodwill are within your dailey reach to help restore the world's commitment to "NEVER AGAIN"!!"
It starts with each person as an individual. It's great to cure the world of all evils, but it has to start within you. If you have prejuidices and believe that violence is the way to solve every problem, how is that going to help change the world? Set a standard for yourself and show your community that YOU can be the bigger person and stop racism and prejuidices in YOU. Once you do that, you can start with your school and be a model as to how a prejuidice-free society would REALLY work.

It is important for the history of the holocaust to be passed on so that people will know and be more understanding about people's differences. It is also important because we can learn from about tolerance and so that we dont' make the same mistakes. That is the purpose of learning anything historical because history often repeats itself.
Those books teach us what it was like at that time and help inspire us to get along with others and work for a better society.
I think the world would be a better place if everyone just learned to get along. Just bringing good will into the world by doing simple acts can restore life spirits. A simple act is a smile. It sounds really cheesy but a smile can really make someone's day. Random acts of kindess, ie. picking people's things up and giving it to them if they dropped it, donating to charity, and that kinda stuff. Go out of your way to help people. But if you're talking specifically about that commitment, we can all learn to be more tolerant and not judge people because of their ethnicity. Avoid stereotypes.

First off, I am a witch, so I have a somewhat interesting response to this question, the holocaust...much like the Witchcraft Trials in Salem of 1692 is an example of what happens when we let ignorance and hatred take control....and it is important to read first hand accounts of these events to get a realistic view of what happens. As for my acts of goodwill, I treat everyone as an equal, and try very hard to bring a smile to at LEAST three people a day.

1. "So history doesn't repeat itself" Realistically if history wants to repeat itself it will. Don't underestimate the power of money combined with charisma. The reaon things like this need to be passed on is to learn from someone else's mistakes. It's like when your parents tell you their experience with drugs and alcohol when your 16 and then you don't do whatever got them caught.
2. They don't help prevent prejudice. Unfortunately the ideals of prejudices are put in your head between the ages of 4 and 6, and books like this just reafirm what you were either taught or not taught to be right and wrong.
3. I wish their were acts within "everyman's" reach to "NEVER AGAIN" but acts of goodwill are simply that. Stop and help someone push a dead car off of the raod. It's not like you can march on Washington by yourself.

I read Ellie Weisel's Memoirs as well as his best know work of non-fiction, Night. In both novels he stresses pacifism in the face of overwhelming terror and helplessness of the JEWISH people. People knew what was happening and did nothing to intervene. That is what should be stressed in each generation: intervention. Do whatever you can to help and to prevent.

Is that your homework? I ask because those don't sound like normal questions someone might have after reading a book, they sound more like questions you're supposed to answer for homework or something, and you can't figure it out......
