when clarice was young, and perhaps during her lowest time, she lived on a farm with relatives. when the lambs were killed, they made loud noises that used to scare her. as an adult, she equated that sound with her unhappiness at the time.
silencing the lambs means that she has finally acheived peace of mind, she no longer feels as low as she did back then
