I'm not sure if melafix will treat a case of fin rot effectively or not. A good treatment for fin rot is Furanace. If that is not available treat with Marycn as directed on the package. Be sure to do change about 12 of the water in the tank before you treat and remove the carbon from the filter so that the carbon does not remove the medication.

aquarium salt is good to prevent bacteria and helps slow down fin rot. Also melafix is good. My betta had red on his fins from an injury so I just used aquarium salt and melafix. Make sure that they are eating all the food you feed them so the food isn't rotting away. Also make sure you are cleaning the tank (depending on the size) enough.

This sounds like a bad bacterial infection, the red spots are sores on his body...I'd say do a little more research on betta diseases. I've never had any health problems with my bettas so I can't really help ya out too much. Good luck!

When my betta had fin rot I got some Ampicillin gel that you feed them instead of food and his fins are healing nicely.
