Yes, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars I would give it 2 stars. It is pretty stupid with just a few funny moments. It was somewhat controversial because the main character masquerades as a black man to get a scholarship. Without meaning to they made an anti-affirmative action movie. Problem was it wasn't a very good movie.

Soul Man is a comedy movie made in 1986 about a man who undergoes transracial transformation with pills to qualify for an affirmative action placement at Harvard Law School. It stars C. Thomas Howell, Rae Dawn Chong, James Earl Jones, Leslie Nielsen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Is that the C. Thomas Howell flick where he wears blackface and pretends to be a black man? Talk about an '80s trash film. Couldn't put a movie like that out today and it not get blasted for hurting everyone's feelings.
Be pissed because it was a garbage movie, not because the potential discrimination of a white dude trying to act black.

Yeah, this guy pretends to be black by taking a large dose of tanning medication and changing his hair to get an affirmative action scholarship into Harvard. Cute lesson-teaching movie. I think it was about the mid 80's that it came out.
