First ,word of mouth applies here.
do you have Family or friends that use a particular mechanic?
Also there is a book called Flat Rate
that mechanics use which tells them how long a job should take, check which applies to your situation.
Also ask for your parts back that they are replacing(or at least to see them, to make sure they are indeed replaced.)
lastly, get a few comparable estimates.

It is a good idea to ask a knowledgeable friend for some basic information as to what you want the garage to do you can the speak with some authority as a lot of garage hands think that women drivers a completely clueless, you don't have to be an expert, and you should let them know that you will be getting a second opinion before they give you a price, and make it clear that you are only asking for an estimate.

It is a horrible aspect of sexism that is left-over, but I hope it is disappearing. I hate to say it, but, have a male friend (preferrably large and coarse appearing) help you with the dealings. It is not common for repair shops to overcharge men, too. I, being a doctor, am frequently overcharged because they think I don't know it.
I vote with my wallet, and tell my friends and anyone who would listen when I am overcharged.
I used to do car repair when I was younger, I know what it costs.

best way: Ask how many hours the job is (its usually a standard), then how much their shop charges an hour (varies shop to shop, usually around 50-100), then ask what all theyll do. Then go online, and see if you can find the parts theyre replacing. if theyre going to charge you 5x as much for a part as you find it for, then dont use them.

and if they ask you if you want stuff dont (like a brake, radiator, etc flush), just say no.

also: only use ASE certified mechanics.

Well maybe you need to take your car to garage to get it fixed instead of a garge.

Learn enough about cars that you sound like you know what is going on and behave confidently AND if you feel like they are attempting to take advantage voice it.

know something about what is wrong with your car before you take it in. And it always helps to take a man with you.
