My gerbil's claws have grown out way too long (they are about 1 cm). He is clearly not able to file them on anything. I tried to clip them with cat claw clippers but I couldn't get him to hold still. Is there something I can do to shorten his claws. If they get any longer, they might inhibit his ability to eat or clean himself.

oh, thats cute! he's too squrimy to cut them!

my hammy had the same problem, the solution is simple:
get a shoe box and put sandpaper on the bottom.
let him run around in there for 10 or so minutes and they will wear down. put him in a few times a day until the nails are normal.

good luck! :)

ps. thanx demongelding!! yea, she's right, dont let him eat the paper! lol

Hello. I agree with Spazzy 100%. I have bred mice and rats for years. That is definately the way to go. Just don't let him chew the paper. You also can try a nail file...but he may rebel against that, too. : )

We have had gerbils for over 4 years and I have never clipped their nails. I have found two really good sites on the care of gerbils and the last one had a link to the The National Gerbil Society
http://members.nanc.com/~mhaines/gerbil.html . Hope you can find the answers you need.

Trim them with something that works then, but not too close back, because you will cut into the part that grows. Use your nail clippers for it.
