The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. What a beautiful story of love, jealousy, deception, struggle and triumph.

I would recomend "the child called it" it is about the worst case of child abuse based on a true story. Sounds sad but it is a really good book. It is from the childs perspective after he is all grown up.

either that or "where the red fern grows" kind of easy reading but a great story

Try some German classics - Herman Hesse: 'Siddhartha' (A great, great book, for me it was one of those that changed my life); E.M. Remark, anything (WWI situations, but not action books in any case!); F. Nietzsche: 'Thus spoke Zarathustra' (this one's really heavy, but worth reading AND re-reading, until one gets it right). Those are the first I could think of, but I would specify as the priority 'Siddhartha' - even if you've read it, go trough it again. If you didn't, I believe you'll be amazed...

Running with Scissors is, uh, interesting, yes, well written, definitely, and about a most dysfunctional family.

Kite Runner is good - story of Afghanistan, culture and people before and during the Taliban.
