I have an intense fear of snakes. Ophidianphobia, I think it is. Just thinking about snakes gives me the chills. (And I'm reading "Redwall" in which one of the villians is a humongo snake. Greeeaaat....) I can NOT tolerate them. Sometimes my dad says "Come and see the snake. You have to face your fear!" And I tell him, "I can't!"
Just can't.
Do you have a phobia like this? How servere is it?

I am afraid that everyone else's phobia is worse than mine, that really scares me. Is there a name for that?

What I've found has been helping me is to go alone. I found once I started going alone, my reactions started to tame a bit. Find a reason to prove something would be my first suggestion. When I started, I kept in mind that my mother won't even open a window at night while June bugs are out. So, I went in alone and got my blood work done (a whole 8 tubes that round,) and when I was finished I was able to say to myself that in a way I was a bit bigger than my mom. Mind you, it didn't stop the tears, vomiting or fainting, but the next time I went for blood work, thinking of that first accomplishment did calm me down. I doubt I'll ever get over it, but I've noticed over the last three years I have been getting better. Less vomiting, less fainting, and no more than five or six tears. Pretty good for somebody who used to beg to be knocked out before injections or blood work, I'd say. Another thing to keep in mind is talking. Nickname yourself Tara Talkalot and converse on anything from the weather to shoelaces. Anything to keep yourself busy. And finally, ask if they can clean your arm with soap and water, rather than alcohol or peroxide. I'm sensitive to smell, and cleaning agents besides soap and water were triggering more panic attacks. Something as small a change as that may help.

I don't have any particularly strong phobias that I'm aware of, although my mother is strongly claustrophobic; she can't stand being in crowds OR cramped spaces. I'm pretty sure I've seen her hyperventilate on one occasion...

Anyways, don't worry. Snakes are feared for both cultural and biological reasons; my mother happens to fear snakes too. That phobia isn't anything to really be concerned about, since you won't be seeing them anywhere in the "real world."

YES!!! Roaches. Small ones, big ones, medium ones. Scary!!! If I see one in the house, I will cringe. I have to pack my stuff for the day until someone can come by and kill it, fumigate, and clean after it. I don't think it's because they're dirty creatures, I think they just look scary, and ugly. Or maybe it's some kind of deep psychological thing I have buried very very deep within me. I know they are harmless, I just am too terrified to even look at one for more than 2 seconds. I remember having constant roach nightmares I was a kid.

i have an overwhelming fear of flying. i hyperventilate, cry, and freak out weeks before i'm travelling. i have to take xanax to even get to the airport. i was actually kicked off of a flight once because they thought i was on illegal drugs...how embarrassing. but i still have to fly (i live 3,000 miles from my family and travel for work sometimes) so there isn't much i can do about it. snakes, however, are totally different and i think it's cruel for your dad to make you see them. unless you're a zookeeper or snake handler, it's not like you NEED snakes in your life. so don;t let him force you.

I am scared to death of turtles. I know most people think I am really crazy to be so afraid of them, but is just can't help it. I can't even stand to see them on TV or in magazines.

speaking in public, standing in line for too long, and going to the doctor. they're more like panic attack triggers than phobias
