Pros are it reduces the risk of SIDS by i think 50%. The Con is that they become addicted to them and it is hard to "wean" them off of it once they start using them and depending on them. It's just like weaning a baby from the bottle. It's a security thing. My baby never took to the pacifier. But she sucks on her hands and I hate that. I think I would rather have her suck on a passey.

Pros: new studies show the using a pacifier at night can help reduce the risk of SIDS. Also it is soothing for a baby in general.
Cons: My daughter is 3 and a half and still needs it at bedtime. I know this is my fault for allowing it to go on. And the dentist did say that it is starting to affect her teeth/jaw growth. So I guess she will have braces.

Step-son: thumb
daughter: pacifier
my daughter had no problem getting off the bottle. The pacifier was a little different. But around 2 years old I cut the nipple on it. And when she went to find it she saw that. I told it was broken and it was garbage. She threw it away. She asked my to buy more at the store. I told her the store didn't have any right now. That is how I got her off it. As for her teeth, they weren't bad. In fact for having a pacifer I think they look really good. She is now 5 and NO cavities-been going to the dentist since 3
As for my step-son-he is 6 and still sucks his thumb. We have tried to make him stop. but nothing works. He has crooked teeth from it, not to mention all the germs he puts in there. Plus I think it is embarrassing to see/have a kid that old sucking on his thumb.
So I go for the pacifier. Can take it away. Plus it keeps them content. Cant take the thumb away.

the youngster won't have greenback teeth from sucking a pacifier or her thumb. that's a ludicrous previous different halves tale. the only benefit to the pacifier is which you would be able to take it away and the hands or thumb are there to stay. i think of you will locate that the infant will make her very own selection approximately pacifier vs thumb. there will be some days once you will no longer care what she sucks on as long as she basically shuts up for a jiffy. believe me...........

I've done real good at not giving my 7 week old a pacifier until last week. I finally gave in. He would want to eat after he ate and I figured out he just wanted to suck so I gave him one. He loved it from the get go which is what i was afraid of. Once they get hooked it is hard to get them off. I am planning on taking my sons away at 6 months before he gets to attached. Right now though when they are little the sucking helps to soothe them.

I always let my children use a pacifier (aka soother as it does actually soothe them) as they had bad colic for the first 3 mths..you don't want them to use it though any more than they need it...It can cause teeth problems but only if used for an extended period of time...i don't like to see 3 year olds walking around with them still in the mouths

AMEN Well Traveled...... i'm still laughing......... I would rather they have a foo instead of the thumb you can't cut their fingers off, however you can heave ho the foo!!!! I've nursed everyone of my sons the 2nd seemed to want to nurse every hour!!!! ouch my Dr. said give him a pacifier? I said WHAT? she said that's why they call it a pacifier he just needed to suckle a little longer.... sure enough he spit it out 20 minutes later. or I took it out once he fell asleep, I agree with well traveled it is so agravating to be with parents who let their children run the show and who can't stand up to a 2 year old and say enough is enough!!!!!! Suck it up as I tell my boys with their wines ;)

pros:
can help soothe them
don't use you rbreast as a pacifier
can stave off hunger so that you can set a schedule like every 3 hour feeding
cons
they will depend on it and so if it falls out when they are trying to sleep they will cry for you to put it back
it will be hard to take it away when they are older
ps. they make them so orthodontically good that they don't cause buck teeth anymore. Sucking the thumb causes buck teeth
