One of my roommates is in charge of our utilities. He hasn't paid our water or electric bill in the past three months, but has gotten checks from all the roommates. I am concerned that he is pocketing my money. I seem to be the only one in my house who is willing to confront anyone when there is a problem, so I'm sure I will be going to him alone if I decide to ask him about it. What should/can I do about him cashing checks but not paying bills? I mean it is his responsibility to pay them since they are in his name, so I am not responsible if they don't get paid. But ideally I'd like to have water and electricity! Help!

The bills are in his name so the electric company would come after him for the money and I would not be responsible. I probably can not kick him out because none of my roommates would back me up in that, and his gf (one of my best friends) lives with us as well.

The best advice I can give you is to put someone else in charge of the bills and start looking for a new roommate.

In the meantime, until he catches up on the bills, I'd put my money for them aside but wouldn't actually give it to him.

I'm not sure if that would be before or after I beat the snot out of him for what might as well be stealing from me. ;)

Whatever you do, don't go to him alone|

Yes, he is pocketing the money|

That sort of thing is becoming more and more common these days|

It is getting so bad that you cannot even have recourse to justice anymore|

What to do is to simply accept the fact that you have to cut your losses and move where it is safe and decent|

Cutting our losses is something we have to get used to, as we can expect less and less justice for wrongs done against us|

Our society is now in the process of breaking down|

It would be a hassle, but you could get canceled checks from the bank and take him to small claims.

I would move and get out of that situation though, that would be the easiest and fastest remedy.
