In the past, and even at present (especially in rural areas), Filipino kids are scared undergoing circumcision as such is done using "pinote," or a bolo-like tool to cut off the excess skin of a boy's organ. Circumcision appears like this: the boy is instructed to firmly close his eyes, his arms held by a stronger adult to prevent the kid from trembling or running away from the "session," and for the "albularyo" or quack doctor also to work on the circumcision smoothly. Since the session is done in an open area, neighbors can witness boys in their community being circumcized or "pinotized". Other boys in line watch in horror as the boy in position screaming and crying in too much pain soon after skin is cut off and with the wound sprinkled with crushed herbs' leaves. Traditional circumcision, or "tuli" (in Filipino) does not use anaesthesia. Those uncircumcized boys who witnessed what they can consider as "the scariest moment of their lives," shun from the regular mass circumcision done once or twice a year in their community. As a result, to help parents convince their little boys in getting a "tuli," they make stories like if you're "tuli", you will grow taller, and if you're tall, many women will like you, or you will become a basketball star, and other similar stories that may help boost a kid's willingness in finally joining the others in the "pinote session." So until this time, the thought lingered like it has become a Filipino belief or superstition.

It is a myth. It evolves from a collective desire of most Filipino men to be tall since being tall is associated also to male attractiveness. It also evolve from experience in the past when boys had their circumcision at the age of puberty, which is also the time when increase in height and build accelerate in time. However, this isn't true. I am tall, but I never experienced the pain of circumcision. At the age of 15, I was only 5'6. By the time I was 16, I was already 5'8". On my 17th birthday, I was already 5'10. I was circumcised immediately after birth.

Whoever told you that, they're lying. I'm filipino, I don't think that's true, and it doesn't matter if you're tall or short. The only way they'd know is if they looked at other guys' privates. Those people who think that are just being stereotypical or someone who thinks of something without knowing the facts.

I'm Filipino and I have never heard of that.
The one thing I did hear was: if smoke follows you during a BBQ, you ate ka ka when you were a baby.
oh, and to the poster saying all Filipino men have the collective desire to be tall is absolutely full of it.

That was a joke in the 60s. In the past, when they say " ang tangkad2 mo." Sagot ng iba, " di pa nga tuli yan!" Young generations do not hear anymore about it.

Thats just something to tell a pinoy to encourage him to undergo the circumcision without complaint. For sure they all want to grow to be tall so they want to have the procedure.

For crying out loud, Chablis, how do you know that? Do they just say, Hey, my buto is not cut? Or do you inquire. I just think it's odd that you know that. I have female friends and I don't know if their privates are shaved, or whatnot. Very weird answer, there, and earns you a thumbs down.
