Salt (sprinkled or bathed in) is used for purification. Sage is burnt for purification.

Pepper is used either against or to do hexes, depending on your folk tradition.

Rosemary, I think, is used for protection and love and rememberance. (cf Hamlet)

The terms herb and spice have become pretty interchangable, however there are differences. Spices are generally known as different parts of plants that have been dried and are used almost exclusively to season food (the most notible exception being for colone and aftershave). Herbs on the other hand are best used fresh. While they are known best in the western civilization for food flavoring, herbs have tremendous medicinal properties and are often used in homiopathic cures in several cultures.

Well whole nutmegs are meant to bring prosperity, so it's good luck to carry one in your purse/wallet. Rosemary is said to aid the memory, lavender is calming and soothing. Basil is also thought to be related to money and abundance. That's all I can think of at the moment!

A bay leaf is said to protect a person from rape or attack. It is best to carry one in your purse or wallet, under the seat of your car and in the northern most corner of the room where you are.
