The big 3 will never dissapear, fully. If they are going down the government will help and bail them out. They bring in so much money for the giverment, if failure is in sight, the government will help them out to turn them around. They have done it in the past, and some of the most revolutionary ideas for todays vehicles have been becuase of that. Think of the minivan. Dodge was going bankrupt and they were going to be gone by the end of the year (I believe it was 1983, maybe 84, can't remember fully). With the government helping them out, funds wise, they created the world first Minivan. It brought them out of the toilet and turned them into one of biggest innovations in automotive history. Then with Dodge again, they were going down in the mid 90s, and then with thier minivans they added the duel rear sliding doors. Now again, everyone has followed thier lead. That is one of the biggest examples I can think of. There are hundreds of others. American automotive companies will not go under because of the politics of things. If they do go under, the second sistering company will take over, ie, if Dimler Chrysler Corp, were to go under and go bankrupt, then the Dodge Corperation would take over. Thats what happened with Plymouth, the sister company of Dodge. What ever vehicle Dodge had, Plymouth had a mirror of it. When Plymouth fell out of the game, Dodge just took over thier ideas. And in retrospect, I am a Ford fan. Ford has the market in a few areas, like thier trucks. They have some of the most dependable trucks out there for the abuse that they can be put under. GM has some very good vehicles, they are disposable for the most part, but for the abuse that they can be put through they are dependable for a very long time. Chrysler has the market on the minivan. Toyota and Honda, ect, has the market on the small car world, and just because thier small cars are good, doesn't mean every vehicle that drives off thier line is a good vehicle, A VEHICLE IS ONLY AS GOOD AS YOU MAKE IT.
I have a 1989 Ford Ranger and it runs better then some of the asian and european vehicles I see at my shop for maintance. Modern domestic vehilce are a lot better then they were 10 years ago. People are biased against that. Just because of the 1984 Escort they owned was a piece of crap, that MUST mean every Ford that has rolled off any assembly line in the history of Ford must be a poor quality car. The same is with Hyndai, People would buy them for $10 000 give or take, new and they expected them to preform like a $20 000 car. It wont. it will act like a $10 000 car. People expect too much for nothing. Parts for cars are going up, labour costs are going up, and quality is going up. People need to realize that the big 3 arn't bad, and that the quality is there now.

FORDS!!.....I grew up with fords and they've been the best trucks ever i love them. My buddy is into chevys and they break down all the time, he always has problems with them. Ford F-150 was actually the best selling vehicle, not just truck, but vehicle for 9 years straight, and they still are the best selling trucks for 31+ years and still going strong. Fords are stronger, more durable, better performance, and they look friggen SWEET!! And all those acronyms people make up for fords don't know ****, they think those up while sitting on the side of the road when the chevys break down.

Well now....GM is really not hurting much anymore, but as for ford and chevy...they are both going to be around for a looooooong time. I personally prefer chevrolet. Both companies have the best trucks by far....fact is Dodge trucks s*&k, but chevy makes far better sedans. As for the first answer given to this question.....yeah VW's are great....I used to sell Volkswagens.....but here is a suggestion....if you are going to buy a VW....make sure you by a tow truck too, cause that seems to be where VW's these days spend most of thier time. I used to work at a VW/Chevy dealer, and 9 out of 10 cars that came in on a tow truck were VW's....and VW parts are VERY expensive. Anyways....any GM product right now is great but especially Chevy, and surprise, surprise, so is a Saturn. Plus who can argue with a 5yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranty?

I Think Chevy and Ford are not doing well because there car use alto of gas. Toyota sales are up why? because MPG. they have hybrids and the regular cars are great on gas. plus there reputation has been questioned alto. I have a Nissan ultimo that has 180,000 miles on it I never have change a starter, or alternator. only oil tune up and front axle but as far as engine goes no problems unlike my dodge caravan that a had for 6 months its been in the shop 3 times. That sticks with me I will never buy another American made car.

I doubt the big three will fall completely, they just have to get out of the rut their in and start getting ahead of the foreign companies instead of just keeping up. The way Ford is going I'm not sure how they are going to do in the next couple years but I think they'll survive. I think the big three will figure something out.

Chevy will survive, but Ford won't. Chevy's are made under GM, so they have lots of monetary support, so if they ever quit selling well, which naturally they won't, they can survive. Fords, on the other hand are not so lucky, they only have Mercury and Lincoln to back them, and recently quit making their Tauraus' so its clear they are going under.

3 years ago, I would have said Ford and GM would be gone in fifty years, but you look at the things they've put out recently-with Ford it's the Fusion, Edge and F-150, with GM, it's the revitalization of Cadillac and the Buick Lucerne, Saturn Aura, etc. They're becoming competitive, finally, and we'll see them in the future.

GM will survive and become the only one left out of the American companies and Toyota will continue to dominate the market as it has been doing.
