For most police officers, you can and probably would get the death penalty (or at least life in prison). But you went with the LAPD, which has thoroughly screwed itself.
The LAPD has had repeated instances of racism. And not the usual racism like a black guy has to spend the night in jail where a white guy would be allowed to go home (it happens more than most white people think but not as much as black people complain--I've worked with quite a few Police Depts. in my line of work and have seen that it is actually pretty true about the racism). No, they have been repeatedly filmed beating the hell out of at least two black guys (one of them being Rodney King) who weren't fighting back. In fact, they couldn't fight back because they were surrounded by police officers; each one throwing repeated whacks with a nightstick.
Because of this the LAPD has a very bad reputation; and if a black guy shoots one, he has a very good chance of getting off. It may have been racism, it may not have been. But when you have seen their background, the majority of us would go with racism as the cause (and that the black guy was just trying to defend himself from those who tried to beat him over his being black). Hispanics like myself could probably get in on that benefit too. I don't really know. But the LAPD did that to themselves.
But for the record, if we know for a fact that the police officer was shot in cold blood (meaning he provided no provocation and he wasn't the one who started things), the suspect is supposed to get the death penalty (even in the cases involving the LAPD).

Does California have the death penalty? I don't think killing a police officer goes over very well anywhere. I'm sure if you killed a cop someone could accidently shoot you or you go to prison for the rest of your life. If it's a civilian, the penalty is not always as harsh, unfortunetly. I think it depends on the judge. Are you in trouble?

The penalty for shooting any office is being charged with capital murder and being sentence to death row. When you shoot a civilian there are certain degrees of murder. Whether it was in self defense, pre-meditated OR IN COLD BLOOD

hell yes it's different than shooting a civilian, not that I understand why you'd be asking! The penalty will be much more harsh because LAPD are law enforcement. Short solution: DON'T SHOOT ANYONE!

If someone murdered a cop, they're screwed.
The death penalty is the death penalty and if the DA seeks capital punishment (most likely) and is granted, whomever dead no matter what.
