Depending on type:

Nonfiction: Running with Scissors - a VERY dysfunctional family - well written, sad, interesting. (Augustin Burroughs?)

Lucky, a memoir about the author's rape on the last day of college, freshman year and what happened after. (Alice Sebold)

Fiction:

The Lovely Bones, also by Alice Sebold, is told from the viewpoint of a 14 year old murder victim.

If you like paranormal type books, Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series are good. Laurell Hamilton also has a series with Anita Blake as the main character. Her main job is raising the dead (zombies), but she is a vampire executioner when needed. Series starts pretty strong and then the plots go awry, but I really enjoyed the first group of her books.

Another in this genre is Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer. A vampire falls in love with a young woman. Problem is he lusts after her blood - he's attracted to the scent. I know there's a follow up I haven't read yet.

Kite Runner is another good book - about Afghanistan culture and its people before and during the Taliban.

Mistborn by potential of Brandon Sanderson. it really is a delusion trilogy, and astonishing. The Gunslinger by potential of Stephen King. this is easily basically the first e book of The darkish Tower, this is seven books entire. Tha darkish Tower is nearly like a horror/delusion/western.
