1. To have some pull in the region (backing them seems to eliminate credit with the other states around them though).

Various reasons. The two main ones are:

1) The no nothing Christian Right (Christian in name only) misinterprets the bible and think Israel is still God's chosen people. Even though Jesus states on many occasions that their status is gone as they rejected the Son, so they have rejected the father as well.

2) Israel is the biggest money laundering scheme the US has. They send billions of US tax dollars. Israel buys US military jets, tanks, missiles, and such. Defense companies (Lockheed, Raytheon...) gives huge political donations to both parties. Your tax dollars fund the candidates.

Isreal is our best ally in the middle east. Also because God has said that any nation that hates Isreal will not prosper. Perfect example is the different standard of living between the US and Mexico. US backs Isreal and is the strongest nation on earth, Mexico hates Isreal and is a third world country

Because they are a free people and because they are Jews who happen to be located in the middle-east. A strategic position in the Arab world. Location, location, location. Fly the friendly skies of Israel, that's what they may be soon saying to U.S. air power.
