Deserts are hot, sandy, dry, you can find oasis there, animals like lamas can take the heat and dryness, etc. I have to write essays for my exam four times a year for 5 years, and I only have 45 minutes to do it. One trick I love to do is to exaggerate good things (just don't get stuck on one). So instead of saying 'Some deserts have oasis which have water.' You can say 'Some deserts have beautiful oasis which have water travelers can drink if they find one.'

Waste emphasizes lack of inhabitants and of cultivation; it is used of wild, barren land: a desolate waste. Wilderness emphasizes the difficulty of finding one's way, whether because of barrenness or of dense vegetation: a trackless wilderness.
