My personal favourite when I lived in Orlando was Clearwater. However, a very close second was the beach on Hutchison Island. I guess Hutchison Island might be considered pretty close to the bottom end of middle Florida, but it's worth the drive.

clearwater is very nice good restaurants nice hotels a pier on weekends the have free concerts. Dayton is fun if somethings going on like bike week the 500 or spring break but its kinda bummy
