Is it the best book ever? No. Is it a funny book? Yes it is. Is it a great book that sums up teenage angst over school, family, parents, peer pressure? You bet it is.
And every page is packed with quotes:
"he was as sensitive as a toilet seat..."
"Jesus needed the disciples like he needed a hole in the head"
"All mothers are a little insane."

I've read it a number of times, the first time when I was 15, and last year, 40 years later, and it's still a classic. It may have something to do whether you're a girl or a boy. Boys identify with Holden more than girls. Girls think he's a bit creepy. And it may have something to do with your age. Young people like him, but if you're older when you first read it, Holden can sound like a whiny pain-in-the-neck.

Here's a suggestion - go back and re-read a few sections, and see if some of the humor and angst rises to the surface. It might make it clearer and more enjoyable.

Oh... My... God! That book sucked! I had to read it when I was in High School...

It rambled... made no sense what so ever, and was so stupid! Those who claim it to be a great book obviously were medicated or were drunk at the time of reading it... That might be the only way you could like it... lol

Many people find they identify strongly with the main character, therefore to them it is the "best book ever." I think people are finding that less frequently however these days... When it was written it was an unusual sort of story I think, but now there are lots of quality books and movies based on characters that average people can identify with.

I agree...I think it is overrated...maybe it would have been better without all the hype...
