Formatting doesnt restore to the factory settings, it wipes it "clean" so to speak, and makes it available to put information on. You basically erase everything on that disk, or partition. You can do that, but you need to make copies of anything you wantto keep, and it wont be setup with the factory defaults. What you want to do is a System Recovery If you have a Recovery Disc, that is the best way. Any disk that says Backup, or restore, anything like that... Or, hopefully your PC has a Restore Partition. It will show up under "My Computer" as another drive, probably D. I'm not exactly sure how to do it from there, never done it. Or there is an option for system restore at the start-up. I dont know what your computer is, but I know on my Compaq Presario, it is f1. You hold it down right after the logo comes up. That way seems pretty easy...it walks you right through it. I hope this helped....

If data on your hard disk is corrupted it is advisable to format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system (usually Windows XP). If a new hard disk is used, you may prefer to partition the hard disk into 2 or more drive. The operating system is installed on the first drive and a backup of the data is stored on the second drive More details at http://fixit.in/format.html

a HDD when formated is only formated. there are not factory setting in formating. i think you are referring to you systems operating system. to set this back to the instalation like you got it new, you need to use the system restore feature. it is located in the systems tools. select the first possible restore point to do this.
