Hi. I have have almost the same blanket and buy things from Schneider's all the time. I live in the U.P. of Michigan on Lake Superior. Lately, it has been -20 below. If your horse has a show clip, he does need a blanket. My gelding shows during the summer months and I let him be a hairy beast in the winter months here. If your horse is in the elements, yes, blanket him. For the heavyweight blanket, no, a fleece underblanket will actually make him sweat and get ill. The 8 oz. insualtion, maybe. It depends on his length of time outside. If it is below 30 degrees, you can add a THIN fleece liner. Just watch him to make sure if he is running around, that he is not sweating. With all of the insulated blankets, most are designed to be worn alone. But, if he is a has a hunter clip or a thin western show coat, yes...he probably does need one. Especially if he is kept in a heated barn at night. I board my gelding with a professional trainer year round and he is in a warm barn at night and out for 2 or so hours a day. He has a medium coat, so I just let him be. Plus, he is a gelding that likes to run around and cause trouble....lol. My horse has more clothes than I do...hahaha. If you need any other answers, drop me an email. I am an adult rider, who has some experience. Good luck and god bless you and your horse.

If you do put a liner on, make sure you use one that won't absorb water, or don't put one on if you turn out in the rain. I don't think the blanket you've chosen needs a liner, especially in turnout where your horse is going to create body heat by exercising.

Ya, we have one similar to that on a couple of my horses and we have a fleece and a slinky under it.
