if the United states continues to act unilaterally in major arenas of conflict, how might this impact the future of the united states?

It will certainly make fighting major conflicts much harder than if there was a multinational force.

We are currently the only country bearing the monetary costs and the majority of the loss of life in Iraq (there are a few thousand forces from other countries). If we had fostered better relationships with our allies that might not be the case. If we had a strong multinational force our aims might be achieved more efficiently because we would not be the face of the "occupiers." We might also have had a shorter stay in the country with more troops on the ground.

We are supposedly fighting a "War on Terror." A war like that requires many years and many lives and with no allies it it very unlikely that a war of that magnitude is sustainable.

Hopefully our next president will fix the dimplomatic damage that has been done. If this is not achieved, the military will continue to be over extended and our deficit will continue to grow.

actually if you look at what the United states has done, they have not done anything Unilaterally. In fact we have had a lot of help and support from other world powers.

Just because the US does not allow its self to be bogged down with decades of UN bureaucracy and corruption does not mean they do not have world support. In fact the questions that need to be raised is why the UN refused (and refuses) to act on its own policies.

the UN and Liberals tried that whole "Unilateral" stuff, but it does not fly.

Britain, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Spain (Until a few years ago), Canada, Australia... the list goes on... all these countries have helped and have worked with the US in all areas of conflict.

Will it affect the Future of the US? yes... it will show us who our allies are, who we can count on and who can count on us for help.

ADD ON: lol, thumbs down? for what? pointing out the US has not done anything Unilaterally? lol put down the liberal rags and open a history book, the US has a lot of international support.

God you people make me laugh every time a fact you don't like comes up...

Overstretched and under pressure in Iraq = going soft on North Korea = further reduced credibility abroad and an increased confidence in places like Iran.

I am still trying to understand why people call this an "illegal" war - Saddam violated the treaties he signed after the Gulf War - why isn't that reason enough to go back?

And France has acted unilaterally before - doesn't seem to have had much of an impact on *them.*

Wish I could tell you. I can tell you this, however it affects us, it's going to be mostly negative as it is now. Our image as a nation is suffering, our credibility is sinking, our soldiers are being thrust into no-win situations daily. I hope we see a complete overhaul next election.

Well, we sure have been ticking off allies left and right. I would rather they support us because we take the time to get their agreement, rather than just because we have the strength to bully them.

We do the dirty work for other rich countries and we to it to innocent countries who don't want us there. It's a lose/lose situation and we need to stop and attend to our own issues. We have plenty of them.

It will lead to revolutionary political change in the United States, since the American people do not want to be an Empire.

They will incur more hatred from around the world and from withing. Since neo-cons thrive on fear and hate, it will be a utopia for them.
