It is an ethnic slur, the river running through Cardiff (the welsh capital) it the River Taff. It also has something to do with the Welsh name for David, I believe it is spelled 'Dafydd.'

I'm Welsh - and proud to be. Living in England now, I'm occasionally called Taffy. I don't consider it an 'ethnic slur'. Do any other Welsh exiles? I'd be interested to know.

Given that the Brits managed to call Guandong, Canton, I assume that Taffy comes from Daffyd. Quite close really!

Uncannily there is an area of Cardiff near the River Taff called Canton.
Logic would say the local Chinese therefore know it as Guandong.

I just assumed it was because of the River Taff that runs through Cardiff and the name comes from that.
