Phoenix metro is larger with more options for schools and employment, most people live in suburbs and with new communities coming up you're best alternative might just be something in between Phx and Tucson... possibly Casa Grande

I was raised in Tucson, and I currently live in the Mesa/Gilbert area, and they both have their good points. Tucson is smaller, cheaper living expenses (but not by much), and have some good school districts. Phoenix is all over the place; it really depends on the area. The East valley (Gilbert, Chandler & Ahwatukee especially) have very good schools, but are pricier to live in. The West Valley has a lot of elderly people, so they don't really care about their schools and it shows. And while Phoenix itself has a growing arts district that's really becoming something, I wouldn't want to live there.

Hope this helps a little. And I wouldn't listen to the bitter lady above me. Her problems sounds more like a parenting issue than a location issue.

I would (and do) choose the Phoenix area, however I don't technically live in Phoenix. The east valley (Gilbert specifically) is excellent. My kids go to A++ schools here. Every place has crime, but it's pretty low here.
Gilbert was listed as the 16th best place to live in 2006 by CNN Money Magazine. Here's a link to their website, which has some great information.

My personal belief is that Phoenix is better, but thats mostly based on the fact that I live in Phoenix and have my whole life and hate Tucson.....

but check this site out you can compare two cities on school, cost of living, economy, crime etc....

The answer is not either one! The state of Arizona is NOT, I repeat, NOT kid-friendly! I moved here from the midwest 4 years ago, and what a HUGE MISTAKE that was! I went to YUMA first (UGH!!!) and the first thing one of my daughters does is get mixed up with a MARINE MAN PEDOPHILE!! She was only 14 then. I put him in jail. I moved to the East valley of Phoenix after that nightmare (Gilbert.Mesa), and the next thing I know that same daughter had got mixed up with a border gang out of San Luis!! She has since then had a gang baby (only 16 yrs old!), out of stupidity to avoid going to the girls prison until she was 18. In a nutshell, the juvenile courts treat me like yesterdays trash both in YUMA and here in MESA. This is why GANGS are on the rise in Phoenix. It's kids like mine they coddle, including her dangerous gang friends, while treating me like the criminal. I don't want to hear one word from the state of Arizona if she ends up robbing a bank!! The courts in AZ are very corrupt, and do not mind violating your civil rights. CPS also plays a big role in that agenda too in the juvenile courts. But of course, you'll never read about that truth in the paper!! It would make the GOVERNOR look bad...I won't even touch on the subject of the border issues!! It is a MESS!! Also, the phone company's out here are ridiculous too, especially when it comes to trying to rip you off on your cell phones. I personally have fought them for 14 months straight, everytime the bill came in. Living in AZ you must be ready for the red-neck corrupt courts, the con-artist phone companys that LOSE your payment trail, and they all tell different stories. Do you like paying high A/C bills? Then you found the right place to come too. Average bill (SRP) in the summer (April-Oct) goes up to $300.00 a month. Maybe more or less for others. It's higher if you are renting a home with only single pane windows! Don't waste your time with any of the public schools here. It's so bad, I pulled my son out of school and placed him in virtual online school due to the fact teachers are jerks out here, and the kids are not controlled, and the bullies are enabled by adult teachers who are just as immature as the kids themselves. Yes...I've seen it all out west, sadly enough. The only other good thing in AZ besides the online school (k-12) is the fast trak colleges. I have a daughter at Apollo doing a medical assisting program, and that's only 9 months to get your meal ticket, versus a 4 year school. Other than that, if I were you, I hope you will be very careful in that final decision to move out to AZ. We are outta here as soon as the kid graduates in June. GOOD LUCK!!
