Credit is on a sliding scale. you probably should pay the $500, because it will probably cost you more in the long run not to, because if your credit score goes down, your interest on unsecured debts (from credit cards) will go up right away, and you will pay more interest for future mortgages and car loans.
There are many ways of getting good credit, and bad credit, and the best Advice I can give to you, is to read your credit card statements, check your credit score, and read some stuff on the internet.

Your lease is the contract for your agreement. If the terms of the lease provide for 30 days notice, you must comply. If you fail to do so, the lessor can recover the funds, plus fees (including attorney costs, if needed). If you violate your lease through non-payment (which this sounds as if it may be) the lessor has the right to report you to a credit bureau.

Simple answer- YES. My husband had an apt with a friend and they didn't pay their rent, got evicted and it really hurt our chances later of obtaining most credit bc credit agencies consider your homestead your most important asset and if you don't pay your RENT, that doesn't look good.
If you don't pay it, you can also end up sued and end up having to pay all sorts of other court costs and things. Just pay it now before it gets to be more.

You owe that money, plain and simple. Expect the landlord to sue you in small claims for it. If you don't pay your judgment within 30 days, it will show up on your credit report. I don't know if all of that would show up on a rental check though.

If I were you, i'd change it to 1 month notice and finish up your contract. Its not worth it going through all the hassles of breaking a contract.
