Ordinary People from 1980. It starred Timothy Hutton and Mary Tyler Moore. Timothy Hutton's character was actually sent to a mental institution for a while after the drowning death of his brother. Mary Tyler Moore's character is in denial, just trying to put on a happy face for the world, and the father (played by Donald Sutherland) just tries to keep peace in the house. It's an intense film and shows many of the nuances of mental illness.

I just watched Running with Scissors the other day & it seemed to have some mental illness... in my opinion the psycholgist is mental... not sure if this one works for you, but it is a decent movie and very weird..
