I want to grow delicious tender green beans. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Something flavorful and tender. Thanks.

Also, are wax beans as nutritous as green beans?

Well it depends on what you are looking for, there are two schools on green beans, those that eat haricot verts, and then there are southerners. In the south were they are cooked till they loose all of their crunch or texture I prefer the flat roma beans, they don't have strings, they are very prolific, have a great flavor, and hold up well to excessive cooking or canning. I prefer the contender or blue lake to pick young and saute lightly, leaving slightly crunchy, though if you let them get larger they can also hold up to canning, though they seem to lose more of their flavor.

To solve the problem, plant both. Unless you are saving them for seed, they won't cross

TopCrop, Tendercrop, and Contender are all very common and should be easy to find. I've tried them all and have good luck with them. There' just no way a store-bought bean can compare with a just-picked young bean.
As far as taste, they are pretty much the same. If you want to try something "meatier" go for a Kentucky Blue or Romano (italian style) pole bean.

Why don't you buy a couple of kinds, plant them and judge for yourself? You can use the leftover seeds next year, and the kind you didn't like, pass on to a friend. By the way, Kentucky Wonder is a huge favorite of mine, but it is a pole bean that gets out of control if you don't like green beans that well. They are a prolific producer long after the bushes are gone.

Blue Lake and Kentucky Wonder are two of the best. They are the only ones my family has ever grown. They do well. As for wax beans, they are almost the same as a green bean. The only difference I ever noticed was the color.

i like the royal burgandy bush bean. it's a dark purple on the bush but turns a rich green when cooked or blanched in hot water. this is a compact plant with beans that bunch under the leaves to offer some protection from the sun. the plants are open enough that the beans are easy to see and pick. they are delicious very yound and small but are as good when bigger as well, and are nearly stringless and tender unless allowed to overgrow.

Blue Lake is a good bush bean. Pick when young to avoid getting strings.

Contender is one of the best, plus it's an heirloom. Heat and mildew resistant to boot. If you want a French bean, try Tavera. Very tender - yum.
