Homework has gotten to be quite the tradition in school. First, for the affirmative view. Homework is prominently listed in a popular publication about the most effective educational practices, so many teachers assign homework because they assume that it is the right thing to do. I have tried going "homework free" in my classroom, but have relented to pressure from parents and administrators to assign some homework. (Simple stuff that I know kids can do on their own, plus I give enough time in class that kids who don't like to do it at home can get it mostly complete. I'm not a big fan of the huge mega-projects)

To hear a dissenting view, the research regarding the usefulness of homework is spotty. Check out alfiekohn.org for a discussion of the research about homework.

Depends on the type of classroom.
My students often did their homework in class, so that we could assist them. Often times, we found that with "sports or working parents" the children did not have the support to help them at home and the projects came back undone and the student was the one whom suffered the most.

It sounds like your an active parent, WONDERFUL. Please just ask the teacher directly for additional work for your child. That is always a great sign when parents want to help in the process.

It used to be assumed that parents help out. This modern era, it is the opposite- sad yet true. Great question.

Because it's not the childs fault that the teacher wasn't able to finish her lessons in class. Children have enough to do at home then having to worry about have to do and remember bringing the homework home to do. Not only that parents have enough to do after they get off of work (clean, cook, and wind down from work) and for the most part some parents don't even know how to help their children with some of the problems their children are having so children aren't even able to finish or under stand the homework.
