Have you considered temping until you find the job you're looking for? Many temp agencies offer temp-to-hire options, where the company you temp for can hire you if they like how well you do the job.

Temp services will hook you up with clerical jobs if you can type and know what a spreadsheet is.

Go back to school and get a two year degree like a paralegal or accounting or early adult education or nursing or something. You'll get hooked up fat with Pell Grants since you are a single mom. Support your family by having a night job as a bartender or something.

temping is a good idea. find a temp agency in your area and sign up. they do not charge fees ( legitimate ones anyway) try looking for work online, your usual craigslist, hotjobs, careerbuilder and monster. maybe perhaps get a part time job at first if you can. temp to perm is good as well.
