well those programs are good tools for graphic designers to know. Word especially. I need to know Word because I get documents in that format all the time. then I bring them into InDesign and create the layout properly. The programs are not all that great for graphics and publishing but they can do alot. also Word is a good word processor for when i need to spell check or grammar check. excel i honestly don't really use at all.

I work as a drafter, and doing estimates and Bill of Materials became necessary for me to do my job.
I also used to do graphic design when I was dumb enough to advertise my illustration and art skills to employers to be taken advantage of.

What I've discovered boils down to this. When you design logos and graphic art for stationery, you'll need to create forms for other company clerical workers to use. They aren't too keen on icky tech stuff like visual basic or advanced functions of AutoCAD or of the graphic design software, and they'd rather have PDF forms that they can simply "fill out" with no editing on their part.

Graphic Designers have to be able to create and read spread sheets and write letters too. It's called multi-tasking when the project manager is out with a cold or something.
