I grew up in the country, and had lots of cats around, and I was always told they used their whiskers to gauge where they could go.
Could be why the cat, that I trimmed one side of his whiskers, got stuck behind the freezer ;)

Yeah the deal with the whiskers is true, and if you are a mean little kid you can cut off one side and the cat will become a little disoriented and walk in to things.
I have seen a cat fit through some really small spaces, where I know there whiskers scrubbed, so they will go into a hole narrower than their whiskers.

A cat uses its whiskers to measure small spaces it can get into although they do on the odd occasion get it a bit wrong!

You'd be amazed at what a cat can do if it's being chased by a big dog.
