how bout tampons?

Well, even being a male, I can give you an answer to this.
I grew up in a very open family so no topic was taboo. And even though you may think that it's gross, my mother was raised in a very poor family so my grandmother didn't buy sanitary products. Of course we're talking the 1920's and 30's. But they used strips of clean sheets and small hand towels (white only!). While this may seem atrocious, they work very well (from what I hear), they were just very bulky. But for the time, they served a very necessary purpose.
If you're just talking about something other than pads, then tampons combined with panty liners work.

definitely tampons. they can be a little weird to put in at first, but they're really comfortable. just read the directions in the box. and wear a pantyliner with them.

And guys, stop trying to answer this question. You're just being a**holes. Especially the one who thinks a douche is a substitute for a pad -- that's just downright stupid.

Edit: except for the guy who answered above me. You're cool.

I don't know if its a GOOD substitute, but there are washable pads that you don't dispose of. You clean them and reuse them monthly. They are better for the enviornment. I have included a link below. But i would personally go with tampons.

I don't think that there is one. They are necessary during that time of the month.
