When I got my guitar, I had a really good friend of mine teach me the beginning of a very easy Metallica song. (Fade To Black, to be exact). I learned that, and then got bored. So I printed off some tabs and learned the majority of those. Then I learned some songs by ear. Notice that I did all of this without knowledge of a single chord! Basically, I taught myself everything that I know so far, aside from four chords that my friend taught me. You can do it yourself, but the first time you need to change a string, get help from someone who already knows how to play. Trust me. It can be disastrous! Good luck with your music!=)

Well the way I began was bit unorhodoxed. I started playing piano when I was 4 years old. I learned to read music by the time I was 5. And at the age of 13 I started learning guitar. Since I had a knowledge of music I started fooling around with the guitar. I bassically learned scale and scale patterns first. Got my fingers used to playing a guitar.. I then learned chord and chord patterns. After that I started studying classical guitar and famous classical composers. One of my favs is Paganini. I really got into Yngwie Malmsteen and after I heard him my whole world changed. i started learning NeoClassical Guitar. And been playing ever since.

It takes practicing everyday for the rest of your life, if you plan to do it yourself. People they accelerate quickly, generally has access to someone knowledge (either the Internet, or a real person).
Now days, kids have access to tabs, and chords to show them almost exactly how to play a song. I say almost exactly, because the tabs aren't exactly like the original musician plays it.
Get a Beginner guide to Guitar.
My first song was "Beethoven 9th Symphony"
Then I learn a few more simple little picking tunes.
Like, Flintstones, Popeye the Sailor, Little Brown Jug, Wild Wood Flower.
Then I found out about the I-IV-V chord progression. With this chord progression, you can basically play (just about) every song in the world.
Also, learn to play as many songs as possible. How you get good at writing songs is by singing the type of music that you really love, then the more you sing those; you will eventually learn the format that those songs were written in and will be able to write your own songs.
Here are my songs:

go to a guitar store and they should have a book for about $10 and DVD's that will teach you the basics that will start you up on playing the guitar. Or you could go and take private lessons which i have been taking for four years, my lessons cost $23 for a half hour session. The teachers are very experienced and will do anything to help you learn. Hope this helps.

Getting the tabs off websites and playing to my favorite songs. Another tip is to learn standing up. And Blink 182 are really easy to learn to play and they are good songs for a beginner.
