Basically, when the engine is cold, the car makes a ticking sound, that has gotten worse over the last year. Combined with this the engine seems to be making more and louder sounds when cold. After 3-4 minutes of the engine running, the ticking sound almost completely goes away and the other engine noise lessens considerably but is still noticeable. Performance hasn't appeared to be affected but the noises are getting worse and worse for the last 2 years. I took it to 2 mechanics who couldn't figure it out before the engine got hot and the noise went away and to a dealer who wants to charge me 800 just to remove the engine and see if thats the problem, not to mention what it would cost to fix. I was just wondering if anyone might have an idea of what it could be, i think it probably is the engine but dont want to go into a mechanic or dealer without having more of an idea so i dont get ripped off. Can anyone help, maybe an idea? The sound seems to be coming from the engine, not elsewhe

Thanks for your answers so far...it turns out it wasn't the valves, they apparently cant be adjusted due to the fact that myne are hydraulic? According to the mechanic. Any other ideas? I had an engine fluch to hopefully remove any sludge slowing down the lifters and it seems to have helped but only very little. Any othr ideas? Thanks to all those who have helped thus far

I have a 2003 galant that is still under warranty that has the same problem. we have had it for about two years and it has been in the shop three times for this. this last time, they kept it for two weeks and took out EVERYTHING and replaced valves and lifters and belts but it still has the noise. My husband seems to think that it could be the transmission because it only does it when you press the gas (kind of a lifter noise), not when it is idling. Before you spend the money getting it repaired, I just wanted to let you know that the dealership has done everything they could possibly do (with no cost to us, thankfully, due to warranty) and it still makes the noise!

As merlin said, a valve adjustment seems to be in order here. It shouldn't cost anywhere near $800 as they are just removing the cylinder head cover and resetting tolerances on your valves. Depending on how much Mitsubishi crammed into the compartment it could take less than an hour to remove the cover, adjust the valves, and replace the cover gasket.

sounds like your oil pump is weak.does the vehicle have an oil pressure gauge.if so check it when cold if it is low then the pump is weak.sound like the pump is struggling to push the oil through the motor. what you are hearing is most likely the lifters. that is what ticks on cars . older dodges did this alot. what weight oil do you use. check the owners manual probably recommends 5w30. if you use heavier than this the pump may have gotten worn out. doesnt usually happen this way but it is possible.if no guage watch for the oil light.it gets quieter as it runs basically because the pump then gets lubricated by the oil flowing through it.

Depending on the engine, most likely, you have lifters ticking. The Mitsubishi 2.0 and 3.0 litre engines are notorious for this. Upgraded lifters are available for the 2.0L in the aftermarket. Mine have been ticking for about 30,000 miles, and I race mine.

it sound to me like you need to replace your oil pump. I had a 2000 ford pick that did the same thing i replaced the oil pump and that took care of that .If this is your problem and it has been going on for two years you could have some engine damage due to the lack of oil to the head

May be a transmission problem if it's doing the same thing with a different engine.
