He was a playwright. He recently died, actually.
The most famous play that he was known for is entitled "Fences". He wrote it in 1982...the play itself is based on a black family in 1957. The dad has dreams to play baseball, but is at a dead-end job. He badly wants the son to try out, but the son has other plans.
I believe he was the first black playwright to get his play on broadway.
