Well it is one way to get a smile from a dishy doctor!
I am single so recieved nothing but the kind appreciation of those whom I did something special for, older ladies in particular. I have done for years. Christmas, Mother's day, Valentine's day. They have been wonderful to me over the years, so I like giving a bit back.

Its true Valentines day is very commercialised but i bet you don't hate Christmas!
I asked a colleague at work if she did anything for Valentines day- she said she didn't because she is married. I think this is quite sad, just because you are married doesn't mean you cant be the same as when you wasn't.
It doesn't have to be much just a special token, or spend some quality time together. You don't even need to spend any money for it to be special.
I think most people talk like this though because they don't have anybody to share it with which i understand it must be hard, its like rubbing your nose in it.
A lot of people say that you don't need a special day, you can do it anytime, but i think its nice to have a certain day, its something to look forward to and lets face it for most relationships after time things slow down and we forget to show that we still love them, we need that reminder to show it!
My boyfriend makes a big deal about tea, he loves it, wants it all the time, so i got him the biggest cup i could find and had a cuppa with a heart shaped biscuit waiting for when he got home. He loved it, even took photos of it to show people because they wouldn't believe how big it is! Lol.
I am sorry you didn't have a good day though. I hope next year will be better.

Yup-my sweetie sent me over a lovely bouquet of flowers (NOT red roses, thank God!!!!) to my office, and the we went out for a nice dinner, and then as a bit of a gag gift, he gave me like 8 boxes of Thin Mint irl Scout Cookies, because last year we were both so poor that all he could give me was one box of Thin Mints and a single rose, so it was sort of symbolic that we're doing a lot better this year.
Although I agree with you about the commercialism and ridiculous overblown gifts that have come to be expected on V-Day, I think that it is a nice holiday to say to someone you love, "Hey- you're everything to me." It's like Christmas- we don't NEED Christmas to get presents for our friends and families and let them know we love them, but it is a nice excuse to do so, that's all. Sorry to hear about your wrist. I wish I could sign your cast!

I got a CD (Pepe Aguilar) and a cordless optical mouse for my laptop. My gf got..... a trash can!! believe it or not. As it turns out, she didnt have a trash can in her room and she would use a shopping bag to put her trash in. Well, the other day we were at Target and she saw, this cool, office, chromed round, shiny trashcan; the one with the little thing on the bottom that opens the lid when you step on it. She liked it and said she'd get it the next time. I took a mental note and then went back and got it for her. Last night, I go: Baby, I got you something that's very, very, romantic. Close your eyes and open your gift, it's a... TRASHCAN!!

Aww, feel better!
And yes, I did receive some "better" things from my boyfriend -- a beautiful flower arrangement, stuffed animals, chocolate covered fortune cookies (which are odd, but delicious), a tremendous balloon that sings "How sweet it is to be loved by you," and more chocolate, lol.
Every day he ran out to get more things for me, and surprised me wonderfully yesterday with such a wide assortment of gifts. I'm wholly aware of exactly how lucky I am, and V-Day is just another day to express it.
