Hi Marion W,
My girlfriend works closely with Cathedral Shelter-her name is Cindy, and if you volunteer with her there she will make you laugh the whole time.
You are sweet to want to volunteer-it really makes a difference. Not only in others lives, but will enrich yours as well.

United Way Voluntary Action center can help place you -- it's like going to a career counselor for volunteering. Be upfront about your interests, time commitments, special skills, commuting constraints, etc.

Hospitals are great. Mount Sinai and Cook County, they're the two main hospitals in the city that take unisured patients. Of the city's hospitals I think they need the help the most.

...and in the downtown area:http://www.timeout.com/chicago/Details.do?page=1&xyurl=xyl://TOCWebArticles2/100/features/help_out_in_your_hood_downtown.xml
...and on the north side: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/Details.do?page=1&xyurl=xyl://TOCWebArticles2/100/features/help_out_in_your_hood_north_side.xml
...and on the South Side: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/Details.do?page=2&xyurl=xyl://TOCWebArticles2/100/features/help_out_in_your_hood_south_side.xml
...and on the West Side: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/Details.do?page=2&xyurl=xyl://TOCWebArticles2/100/features/help_out_in_your_hood_west_side.xml
...and one more for people who want to volunteer but don't have a lot of time: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/Details.do?page=2&xyurl=xyl://TOCWebArticles2/100/features/quick_somebody_help.xml
