valve cover. i remember reading somthing about flat tapet cams being noisy especially when you have a big cam with high spring pressure. the cam's advertized duration is intake 286 exaust 292. the engine is a 40 over (dont know how th write the number properly) 454. the car is not warmed up but the oil pressure is good. dad said he herd the noise going to and from work and that the car did not reach operating temp, cause it is very cold right now. it only got up to 180 dergrese and the noise is constant as long as you have your foot on the gas. not sure if it was making the noise before, the readjustment but the car does feel a bit more powerful, it breaks the tiers loose a lot eaiser.

it has push-rods and that could be the issue, bent push rod or clogged push rod not letting the rocker arm get oil thus it taps. warped rocker arm, cracked rocker arm. another issue... a flat or collapsed lifter... assuming you kept hydraulic lifters in it. Even a flat spot on the cam usually don't make tappet noises.

Simple test for that is this... take off the valve cover on the side its doing that. run the vehicle, see if the noisy one is putting out oil. if not then fix problem. if that isn't the problem see if you can snug it down without changing the pitch of the engine. doing only 1/4 turn at a time. Normally I would back it off till it clatters a lot then snug it down 1/4 at a time till quiet. Your book says take it 1/4 turn more.
