Without going into too much detail, the country underwent a social revolution strikingly similar to the one going on in America at approximately the same time. This isn't surprising when you realize that many of the same philosophers and political theorists were essential contributors to each country's cultural upheaval. The primary difference though is that in France the dominant mode of thought was universalism, the precursor to socialism. "Liberty, equality, fraternity" was the battle-cry of the era, and the consequence is contemporary, socialist France.
To Monarchic - Different in means yes, but their philosophical ends were strikingly similar, as they were all part of the same intellectual community. The way things ended up occurring in France, as opposed to America, was in large part due to the fact that they were, ultimately, very different foundations from which a new enlightened republic could emerge. America had a clean slate, and new independence - they hadn't overthrown the Monarchy, they'd merely separated from it.

The Republic was formed, but it was too intellectual for average people, and this led to Napoleon coming to power.
Then Napoleon was toppled, and a new (constitutional) monarchy formed.
Then, that was replaced with a new (Second) republic.
Then, Napoleon's son, Louis, took over.
Then, after he was toppled, yet another (Third) republic was formed, which stands today.
Just think. America only fought monarchy once, and even then allowed it to continue elsewhere. France succesfully fought monarchy no less than *three* times.

The legislative assembly found evidence of Louis XVI's treason and tried him for it. On July 21st 1793, he and Marie Antoinette were guillotined. France operated as a terrible version of a repulic in the assemblies eyes with various leaders (none of them good) until you hit The Terror which executed many people for no reason. Eventually you have the ascension of Napolean who is the most famous militarian dictator of all time. He reigned from around 1804 to 1814/15 when he fell and was exiled
ps. French Rev. wayyyyy different than American. We established our constitution from beginning without internal conflict or starving people pressuring us for relief. And we didn't have thousands of people publically executed. It was period of great debates for France. not relaxed decision making
