I still use floppy disks but there seems to be something wrong. When I try to open a disk I get the message that it has not been formatted. When I try to format it I get the message that it cannot be formatted. Can anyone tell me why this is? My son uses the floppy disk drive a lot for his college work and it is badly missed since it started to act up.

For Alex A - Where would this flash drive connect to? Would I have to get a technician to fit it or would it fit into a usb port?

The drive heads may be dirty.
Get a Floppy Drive cleaner and use some alcohol on it to clean the heads. usually available at Radio Shack for $2-3.

I have looked at all the cases and I can tell you that AMANDA is very close to the truth. It could be the floppy drive that is broken. You can get PC'S that have floppy disk drive like yours and mine if it's an old OP system because they dont make them any more in the new ones. You can go in a store and buy a PC and the man disappears in a back room and gets one for you. He tells you this and he tells you that but he did'nt tell you that it will have to have some upgrades. My first problem with my floppy drive is that after I inserted a disk and heard a click..but then a message said'PLEASE INSERT A DISK AND MAKE SURE THE DOOR IS SHUT'. I did several times and the message was just the same. I called in an engineer and he said that the wiring was not connected up properly. He then said that he would give me an upgrade for free and is now working just fine.

Try a brand new fdd u know that is good and working if u still have the same error msg then u know it's ur floppy drive NOT the disk itself. But i am willing to bet that it is just ur floppy disk. What u might also wanna look into purchasing is a zip drive or flash drive which is way more easier to use and can also store a lot info as well... not to mention the fact that it is relatively cheap too.
Cheers and good luck!

First, check the device monitor under system properties in the control panel to see if windows is reporting any problems with the drive. If there are no problems listed then you can try cleaning the drive. You clean the drive by using a can of compressed air to blow out the dust that accumulates inside the drive. You will want to remove the drive from the case to avoid blowing the dust onto the motherboard.
First remove the screws along the edges at the back of the case to get the cover off. Now, slide the cover back to get access to the floppy drive. Unhook the two cables connected to the drive. Now remove the screws on the side of the drive. Slide the drive forward and out of the case. Use the compressed air to blow out the dust then reinstall the drive. If the drive light stays on when you power up, then the flat, wide cable is connected wrong and you need to power down and reconnect it so that pin one on the drive is aligned with the red stripe on the cable.

The floppy drive probably broke. Try using the disk on a different computer and see if it is just the disk. If it works elsewhere, then you need to get a replacement drive. Floppy drives are usually 15 bucks or less.

Rachel, can i recommend you purchase a USB flash drive. It is a small data 'stick' that can hold one thousand more times than a floppy disk and are easily transportable. They are more compatible with modern computers at colleges as they are modern as floppy disks are being phased out. try amazon.co.uk or overclockers.co.uk

check the disc protector. It if switch to protect, you will not be able to do much but read from it. This will also make it seem like your drive is broken if you try to format or write to it.
