Yes I had an African woman approach me in passing when she stopped, put her hands together and bowed to me while speaking her African language. I think it was Somali. She realized I wasn't who she thought and just said "Oh." and walked on.

Yes. I have a Southern accent, and my pronounciation of certain words is very similar to that of citizens of Great Britain and Australia. When I lived in the Northern US, people sometimes assumed I was English or Australian, especially since I'm quite pale. In Cuba, they also thought I was English, but that's probably because not a lot of Americans visit there.

BTW, I can speak with almost no discernible accent when I choose to.

Yes. I'm mixed race (Caribbean/white/Indian) but my nationality is British. I used to get called a Paki (obviously as a racist slur) but since all the terrorist sh*t, people seem to think I'm Muslim again, when trying to offend me, (which many ignorant people in the UK think is a race.) Other people have said I look South American, Greek even Italian and Spanish. I'd prefer it if people actually asked me where I'm from rather than tell me. I'm really proud to be British (both my parents were born here) I really hate it when people don't believe me and say "no, you're from ....?

I'm mistaken for a Canadian once in a while (I have a South Dakota accent I guess, which sounds Canadian to some in the west)

Frequently:

At the age of 9 I moved from Northern Ireland to England. My class mates thought I was from the USA but that was because of my Belfast accent

I went skiing to Colorado. Locals thought I was from the 'East' ie the E coast of the USA again because of my (British) accent!

I once pretended to be German in Dartmouth when chatted up by a group of cheeky male 'admirers'. I gave tham a false name and address in Mannheim (had them truely foxed, when I declared their German spoken 'viz a vezzy Henglish accent'!)

A Phillipino work colleague asked me 'Are you Icelandic, because you are so beautiful'! (blonde hair and just back from skiing!)

Yes, I get asked if I'm japanese all the time. Ok, fine, there is no way of telling apart from the language and level of politeness but at the end of the day all I wonder is, who cares?

My partner is Swedish and, because we are both blond with blue eyes, people almost always assume I'm Swedish too - until I speak and they hear my Northern English accent.
